Yoga of Bass – A Workshop on Music, Yoga, Ecstacy and Freedom

Yoga of Bass is a 4.5 hour workshop combining lecture, discussion, yoga, movement and a live downtempo Dub Kirtan DJ set.

International DJ/Music Producer FreQ Nasty (aka Darin McFadyen), a yoga practitioner for 13 years, and his partner yoga/meditation teacher Claire Thompson offer an engaging and interactive look at the ecstatic, life-changing experiences people have with music, Yoga and the dancefloor. This 3 hour workshop combines lecture, discussion, yoga, movement, and a live downtempo DJ set, all focusing on the relationship between the ecstatic dance floor experience and the meditational path of Yoga.

In the talk, Darin and Claire give personal and musical examples from their lives and careers, investigating what the classical Yoga texts have to say about ecstatic experiences and exploring how a yogic and spiritual practice can help you bring this feeling of love, unity and connectedness off the dance floor and into the rest of your life. Then put these ideas into motion as Claire leads a vibrant yoga asana and free movement class weaving in themes from the talk, all set to a specially sculpted, dub and bass-oriented DJ set by Atmaspheric, FreQ’s downtempo alter-ego.

Claire and Darin have offered “The Yoga of Bass” presentation in the United States, Canada, England and Australia at yoga studios, art spaces, dance clubs, and music festivals including Wanderlust Yoga Festival, Lightning in a Bottle, Glade Festival UK, Eclipse 2012 Australia, and Symbiosis. Together they have studied the great texts of Yoga and Buddhism with their teacher Venerable Sumati Marut and the Yoga Studies Institute, and perform with their band the Dub Kirtan All Stars ( Claire has trained at Exhale in Los Angeles with Hala Khouri and Julian Walker, as well as practicing massage therapy for 14 years, while Darin has practiced Yoga in the Satyananda lineage for 13 years.

Like sands through the hourglass, so is the Yoga of Bass…

April 5, 2013

Yoga of Bass w/ FreQ Nasty and Claire Thompson May 19th at The Studio Reno

We are really, really excited about this event. I started doing yoga very frequently starting in January, 2012. Literally four to six days per week I find myself breathing, stretching, (at times) sweating, falling over, and oftentimes, as I am known for in classes, the guy who falls asleep during the final pose (corpse pose). Yes…I have literally fallen asleep and gone elsewhere, waking up as everyone is leaving….this isn’t uncommon either. I am “that guy.”

Practicing yoga regularly was probably the most positive lifestyle change I have ever made. Due to the frantic pace of life and work, which mostly takes place in home, having that 60 to 90 minutes where I get to totally clear my mind of everything is necessary. Everyone doing yoga together can really bring me to that IT place…like at a show when the performer(s) and crowd are totally connected and locked in together. The way I feel after yoga sometimes is like how when I walk out of an awesome show.

I met FreQ Nasty (Darin) when I booked him (as a huge fan) to perform with Bassnectar in 2008 or 2009. He is one of the most intelligent, kind and gentle souls I’ve met in the business (and life). Claire Thompson I met around 2010 through him and I can say about the same for her. Since I first heard about their Yoga of Bass I’ve been interested, but it didn’t feel right as at that time I wasn’t on that path…but now as my universe has overlapped with theirs. I’m really excited to help promote this as my favorite things are music, yoga, food, connecting with people, finding IT and sunshine.

Fresh Bakin’  presents

Christian Bauhofer, known by his fans as his party crushing alter ego Minnesota, is a producer and DJ heralding from Santa Cruz, CA that has been lighting up venues across the country with his frantic energy and pounding bass. At 23 years old, Minnesota has recently spent his time touring with acts such as Big Gigantic and Paper Diamond while artists like Bassnectar and PANTyRAID have been incorporating his tracks into their sets. “Quickly becoming a staple in my sets,” commented Bassnectar when discussing the use of Minnesota’s track “Push It”. “Perfect for when I need a track that is epic and churning but also melodically hyped.”

Mention the name Sabo to anyone familiar with the tropical end of EDM and the response will be unanimous: deep, unquestioning respect, tinged with a healthy measure of awe. For the past 15 years, the globetrotting DJ and producer, now based in Los Angeles after moving from his native New York, has set the benchmark for his peers, thanks to his unmistakable signature style: ‘Funky music to make you… feel good’, as he describes it – an irresistible, resonant, Balearic fusion that draws upon house, tropical bass, latin, Brazilian, afrobeat, disco, reggae, cumbia, dub, Miami bass, hip hop, funk and soul.

Additional acts for the evening include Los Angeles dub-hop producer Protohype, west coast bass expert DJ Shawna, Baltimore’s DCARLS, San Francisco’s heavy glitch Slayers Club, Reno’s Boggan. Sound for the evening will be provided by Soulstice Sound, and lighting by Double D Productions. Headliners to perform at 12:30PM. Fan Appreciation Night at 1UP

January 29, 2013

LOCATION:  1Up, 214 Commercial Row, Reno NV
DATE:  Thursday February 14, 2013
TIME:  10:00 PM

As a thank you to our amazing music community Fresh Bakin is hosting a FREE night of music at downtown Reno barcade 1UP this Valentines Day featuring Canada’s SMALLTOWN DJS along with BOGGAN, JOE SNARKY, WOMBAT COMBAT, and TRILL PICKLE.

If your ears work, you can’t not have fun at a Smalltown DJs gig. The Canadian duo’s uncanny ability to make crowds feel like schoolkids at recess stems naturally from their focus on maximizing fun for themselves. Riding the first wave of DJs that emerged from Diplo’s Hollerboard site in the mid 2000s, Smalltown DJs have played shows across the globe from Fabric in London to Paris & Helsinki, from U-Hall in DC, to Brooklyn to LA. With highlights that include a one-year stint in Las Vegas, and Sean White’s gold medal party at the Olympics in Vancouver. After some production success with Smalltown Romeo (their collaboration with Shad “Boom Ha” was featured in the HBO show “Girls” and in the Jonah Hill movie “The Sitter”), the boys have branched out in 2012 with 5 releases on various labels including Sabo’s Sol Selectas & No Brainer of Berlin. These tunes have been played by djs around the planet namely A-Trak, Diplo, Toddla T, Sinden, Annie Mac, and more.

Reno favorites Boggan, Joe Snarky, Wombat Combat, and Trill Pickle will get the evening started and Soulstice Sound will bring the bass for an incredible evening of music. This 21+ event is 100% FREE.

Be a part of movie history….Fresh Bakin’ and Bryon Evans Films shoots a scene for The Empire Strikes Back: Uncut

January 16, 2013
Post Image

People keep asking why we keep asking for extras….well as Star Wars nerds, when we saw the fan project Star Wars: Uncut, we couldn’t believe it what we witnessed. They took Episode 4, A New Hope, and chopped it up into 20 second chunks. Then after the fans went and re-shot the scenes however they wanted to, the producers piece it back together. What results is a non-stop laugh-a-thon (first time typing that!) of mostly low budget, hilarious scenes….sometimes live action, sometimes stop-action with Legos and other toys, sometimes drawings, or other things you’ll never expect. The Star Wars mythology is so embedded in our brains that we all have certain scenes, lines, conversations, etc that totally remind us of Star Wars. When we see these scenes done by other people, but following the continuation of the story, it’s makes for a totally fresh and interesting watch.

So at 1pm Thursday, 1/17, we are meeting at the Mount Rose Meadows to shoot the following scene. The one with Princess Leia is already finished, so we are asking people to wear ski/snowboard gear (dressing ridiculous is totally encouraged) to shoot the scene with Rebels getting ready for the Imperial attack on Hoth Rebel Base.
