edIT of The Glitch Mob talks music and the age old question: Heathers or Mean Girls?

July 23, 2013

Although Edward Ma, more commonly known as edIT of The Glitch Mob, will make a solo appearance in South Lake Tahoe, it doesn’t mean fans of the Mob should be at all worried about their forthcoming album.

“I am currently 100 percent devoted to finishing The Glitch Mob album,” Ma said in a recent interview.

After almost 10 years of performing professionally, edIT will come back full circle by delivering to fans a highly anticipated solo set at Montbleu after Phish leaves the stage on July 30th in Opal Nightclub.

But even for his upcoming solo performance, there’s a certain level of dedication he’s willing to give off for a night in Tahoe. Having played shows with the trio at festivals like Lightning in a Bottle and Lollapalooza, Ma is no stranger, or hater, of the Reno-Tahoe area.

“Emmerich’s parties always rock,” Ma said. “He knows how to connect with a crowd and make them care about his shows; a lot of promoters don’t know how to do that. Whether it be in Reno or Tahoe, I know he’s going to put on a good show.”

Having performed at SnowGlobe, I think he can safely say that. Over the years, Ma says that he’s more than impressed with where his career has gone, whether it be as a solo act or has a dedicated member of The Glitch Mob.

He began making solo albums before he ever got with the Mob, and has learned to evolve both his personal and group sound over time from just heavy bass and cool sounds, to a more focused vision of where the music is going and how it’s getting there.

“There’s a very specific, narrative message and story we’re trying to deliver,” Ma said.

The responsibilities for edIT are stacking up as he approaches the completion of the Mob’s new album, which will be released this fall, but he loves what he does and said he wouldn’t have it any other way. Even through the excitement of playing solo next week, he hopes to have The Glitch Mob make an appearance as a group eventually in the Reno/Tahoe area.

“Honestly the biggest achievement is knowing that I have touched people in a positive way through music,” Ma said. “You can’t put a dollar on that.”

Ed’s connection with his fans has given us the opportunity to solicit some lingering questions from the community.

Fresh Bakin’: Geek question – what is your favorite piece of hardware (for both live shows and producing) and why?

edIT: Live Shows: Jazz Mutant Lemur. It lets me build my own custom control surface which is amazing.

Production: Voxengo SPAN Plus. Critical for keeping mixes balanced in an untreated room.

Fresh Bakin’: What is your pre/post-show activity? How do you get amped up, and what do you do to chill out afterwards?

 edIT: Pre Show: mandatory powernap

Post show: video games back in my hotel room

Fan Ryan Kandell: Do you make your glitches with a program like stutter edit or tornado or do you do them all one at a time?

edIT: Everything on Crying Over Pros and Air Raid was done by editing audio. I have used BT’s Stutter Edit, but mostly for transitions. It’s a great plugin. We bought Tornado, messed around with it for a few hours and haven’t used it since.

Fresh Bakin’:  You don’t play solo much…what can people expect?

edIT: I’m gonna try to hit all of the bases. A little Crying Over Pros, a little Air Raid Material, a little Glitch Mob and some unreleased stuff.

Fresh Bakin’: Which character do you relate most to in “Zoolander?”

 edIT: Probably Mugatu.

Fresh Bakin’: Heathers or Mean Girls?

edIT: Heathers was all the rage with the girls when I was growing up.

Fresh Bakin’: What advice do you have for someone starting out?

edIT: Tell your story. Don’t sweat the haters. Practice makes perfect.

edIT will play at Montbleu in South Lake Tahoe on July 30 at the official a.PHertparty with SubTropixx, Irieyes, Coop da Loop, and S1nth3sys. Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door and going fast! 21+, doors and music at 11 p.m.

BoomBox consists of two versatile producers, DJs, songwriters, multi-instrumentalists and longtime friends Russ Randolph and Zion Rock Godchaux. Together they have developed an electronic blend of vintage Rock and Blues made to move dance floors while incorporating their signature Backbeat, Psychedelia and Funky House sounds. Applying a multi-track platform, they are free to create their hybrid style on the fly with a rhythm that makes fans move. Derived from the rich musical history of Muscle Shoals, AL, to the psychedelic rock and underground electronic scenes of the west coast, their unique approach is achieved by blending of sound and culture.

BoomBox has played venues such as; The Bounce Festival and Snowglobe Festival.  However, each live show is unique to the venue and the crowd, who are the driving force of the rhythmic BoomBox experience. “It’s all natural, it’s all in real time, and that’s why it’s Rock ‘n’ Roll”, says Godchaux. Traditional set lists are never created prior to shows, instead, BoomBox chooses the music based on the atmosphere, to create a one-of-a-kind experience for fans. Randolph adds, “We just want to go out with no game plan. That way it’s fresh for us, and we can follow the energy of the crowd. We’re down to get down, and we hope that people are down with us.”

BoomBox’s first release, Visions of Backbeat, contained the breakout song “Stereo” that built the foundation for their rapidly growing fan base. After years of steady touring and honing their sound, they released their sophomore effort, downriverelectric, and was hailed by critics as a progressive follow up effort. BoomBox are continuously working on new releases, using a blend of programming and live instrumentation with both members on drums, Randolph on keys, and Godchaux on guitar, bass and vocals.

Chk Chk Chk (!!!) at Knitting Factory Reno

PRESS INVITATION / FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
EVENT: Fresh Bakin’ presents (chk chk chk) with WHO CARES
LOCATION: Knitting Factory 211 N. Virginia St. Reno,NV
DATE: Wednesday August 28th, 2013
TIME: Door’s open at 7 p.m. Show starts at 8 p.m.
TICKETS: All ages show, $15, $35 VIP http://freshbakin.inticketing.com

Fresh Bakin’ will showcase Chk Chk Chk (!!!) at the Knitting Factory August 28th, 2013.  !!! is an American band formed in the summer of 1995 by the merger of part of the groups Black Liquorice and Popesmashers. After a successful joint tour, these two teams have decided to mix the disco-funk with more aggressive sounds and integrate the hardcore singer Yah Mos. After a tour together, members of Sacramento bands The Yahmos, Black Liquorice and Popesmashers formed !!!.

The band’s name was inspired by the subtitles of the movie “The Gods Must Be Crazy”, in which the clicking sounds of the Bushmens’ Khoisan language were represented as “!”. However, as the bandmembers themselves say, !!! is pronounced by repeating thrice any monosyllabic sound. Chk Chk Chk is the most common pronunciation, but they could just as easily be called Pow Pow Pow, Bam Bam Bam, Uh Uh Uh, Caw Caw Caw, Boo Boo Boo etc.  The URL of their official website and the title of their MySpace page, however, suggests that “Chk Chk Chk” is the preferred pronunciation.

This event will also feature music by WHO CARES.  This CA group features indie style hip-hop music and has toured the West cost extensively.  Their most recent performance was at the Bounce Festival  in CA.

Tickets for these shows are $15 for general admitance or $35 for VIP and are available at Melting Pot World Emporium, New Moon Natural Foods Truckee and Tahoe City, Cal Neva cage or online at http://re.knittingfactory.com/, www.www.staging.freshbakin.flywheelsites.com
